Clongowes Wood College SJ

Tapping into Christmas zeitgeist that was everywhere in Clongowes on Monday the Festive Season was given a boost by the proliferation of Christmas Jumpers and other seasonal garb around the school as part of a fund raiser for The Society for the Relief of the Poor and Aged (SRPA), now in its 37th year. The SRPA attempts to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and aged in the area around the college and the work done by the society strives to be true to the Jesuit ideal of ‘Men for Others’.

This is the 23rd year since Brother Charles ‘Cha’ Connor took over as director of the SRPA from its founder Fr. Brian Cullen sj. He is what makes this society possible and if it were not for him the society would not be half of what it is today and we owe him a debt of gratitude for that.

Addressing the school, Brother Cha expressed his grateful thanks to Mr Frank Kelly for organising the collection at the Christmas Concert (December 13th), which raised almost €1,500. He thanked the parents, teachers and staff for giving so freely to the needs of the poor and elderly in this locality. Bro Cha’ explained the money raised will bring bags of coal, firewood and Christmas presents to all the needy.

He also thanked Mr Pat Keenan, Head of Maintenance and his staff for helping him to cut the timber and bring it to the elderly and needy. Finally Brother Cha’ paid tribute to everybody who organised the wonderful concert and especially to all the musicians and singers.
