Scientists put to the test - Clongowes Wood College

Posted: 16th January 2014

On Thursday 14th November, six students from Rhetoric took part in the regional Irish Science Teachers Association quiz in NUI Maynooth. The quiz consisted of eight rounds of six questions and a wide range of knowledge and understanding of the three core sciences studied here in the school would prove essential. Four out of the six of us who took part in the quiz (Ross O’Carroll, Gabriel Coulter, Gerry Hughes and Matthew Coyne) are currently studying two of the three main sciences whilst Bill Carroll and Pierce Hickey study all three.

A week in advance of the quiz we all got to work studying our relevant sciences and from Monday on-wards we began sitting mock quizzes individually, with Mr Stephen O’Hara as our mock ‘Quiz-master’. It became clear that quite a bit more practice was need before the quiz on Thursday evening !

On the evening of the Quiz the six of us traveled over to NUI Maynooth with two Messrs Kevin Maume and Michael Quane. We split up into two teams of three, CWC 1 and CWC 2. The quiz was quite challenging so it was fortunate that quite a few of the mock questions we had completed with Mr. O’Hara in the nights previous popped up! Unfortunately it wasn’t our day with CWC 2 finishing just outside the qualification zone on 31 out of a possible 48 and CWC 1 three points further back.

Despite not earning ourselves a place in the national final in Trinity College, we all thoroughly enjoyed the evening and, to our delight, it was topped off by a traditional McDonald’s in Maynooth courtesy of our mentors!

A big thank you to all our science teachers (Messrs Maume, O’Hara and Quane and Ms. Edith Kearney) in helping us in our preparation for the quiz.
