Rhetoric Drama: Nov 22 – 24th - Clongowes Wood College

Posted: 15th November 2012

Picture by William Lappin, Rhetoric and posed by Oscar Hassett [Capt. Stanhope]

This year’s Rhetoric drama is R.C. Sherriff’s 1927 anti-war drama “Journey’s End”.  It’s a compelling tale of life in the trenches of World War I, capturing the grim reality of the lives of the men who served in the British army.

‘Journey’s End’ is a complex drama, featuring Capt. Stanhope, aged 21, who has responsibility for ‘C’ company.  Stanhope [Oscar Hassett] has become de-sensitised having served in the trenches for over three years. His sole companion, Osbourne [Tom Goodman] tries to console him at moments of despair.  Young Raleigh, [Dan O’Sullivan] enters the grim world of ‘C’ company, and tries valiantly to make sense of his new life and old school friend Stanhope.

Rehearsals have been going on since September and once again the play is directed by Mr.Tom Carroll.
