Reading Challenge - Clongowes Wood College

Posted: 11th December 2014

There is a hunger for reading in Elements as shown by the number of students who were presented with a Reading Challenge Certificate yesterday morning by the Headmaster, Fr Moloney S.J.

Over half of Elements students took on a challenge to read four books by four different authors. From a reading list that included titles such as Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo, Gone by Michael Grant, The Giver by Lois Lowry and Chalkline by Jane Mitchell students chose two books to which they added a further two of their own choosing.

The challenge stretched the students beyond their comfort zone of constantly reading books by one favoured author. It exposed them to different writing styles, different subject matter and in some cases to the experience of a different genre.

The students will get a chance next term to build on their success when a new reading challenge will be presented.

Well done to all students who participated and many thanks to their English teachers, Mr Shane Heslin, Ms Anita O’Shea and Mr Brendan Shalvey, for supporting and encouraging their students in this endeavour.
