Clongowes 5km Fun Run – March | Clongowes Wood College

Posted: 20th January 2019

The first ever Clongowes’ 5km Fun Run will be held at Clongowes Wood College on Saturday 23rd March at 11.30am. The fun run is part of the Transition Year Duck Push, which raises funds for medical equipment for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. The project is in its 26th year and has raised over €2m for medical equipment during that time. All proceeds from the Fun Run go towards the purchase of equipment for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin.

The running surface includes tarmac, forest track and grass and will bring the athletes through the beautiful grounds of the 200 year old Boarding School.

We are looking forward to welcoming athletes of all levels as well as those out for a brisk stroll though the grounds. The Run will also provide time to spend a few hours with old friends as well as an opportunity to make some new ones – all in the great outdoors.

Even if you are a regular visitor to Clongowes, the course will take you around parts of the grounds that you haven’t seen before, as the track winds around the picturesque rugby and cricket fields. The route will take you across The Pale, through the trees and into the historic 19thCentury Pleasure Grounds as well as around the 18thCentury Formal Walled Garden.

It’s a really beautiful and historic venue and in aid of a great cause so put it in your diary and we’ll see you there!

Transition Year Duck Push

The students at Clongowes first started pushing ducks along the 200km route from Dublin to Limerick in 1994 to raise funds for life saving medical equipment for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital and have raised over €2million to date. Equipment purchased has included portable ultra sound machines, an Ocular Coherence Tomography Machine for the Eye Department, a Getinge Autoclave for the Microbiology Laboratory and a Sepak Tissue Processor to help children who need bone marrow transplants.

Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital provides care for some of Ireland’s sickest children and taking part in the Duck Push is an essential part of the Transition Year programme in Clongowes and the culmination of a year’s hard work. Before pushing the ducks across the country the students will already have raised money through a variety of activities ranging from mini companies and pop up cafes to coffee mornings, barbecues and a highly successful Golf Classic in the K Club.
