‘Chalkline’ author Jane Mitchell will visit Clongowes this Fri 22nd to deliver a presentation and writing workshop to Elements…
Jane last visited the school in 2012 when our current Poetry students were in their first year. ‘Chalkline’ was loved then by the students and remains a popular book. Endorsed by Amnesty International (UK) for contributing to highlighting human rights and the values on which they are founded, the novel gives the students an insight into the life and mind of a child soldier.
They walk in the shoes of Rafiq, a young boy captured by Kashmiri Freedom Fighters whilst attending school. The novel also highlights the effect of such child kidnappings on family, in this instance a Muslim family. The themes and setting of the novel give the students a view and experience of the world quite different from their own.
No doubt Jane Mitchell will captivate this year’s Elements students as she speaks about her creative work, how it was inspired and how it was published. On this visit Jane will also deliver a writing workshop, so lots to look forward to for Elements this Friday afternoon.
