In celebration of World Book Week, a D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) event was organised by the James Joyce Library here in Clongowes today, when the normal timetable was dropped at 10.20. For forty minutes students and staff read books (or e-books), graphic novels, magazines or newspapers of their choosing. All D.E.A.R. participants also got a treat as the event ended with a joyful consumption of creme eggs.
This was a time for all to step outside of routine and the curriculum. It allowed for self-directed learning as students and staff chose what they wished to read to gather knowledge and experience of the world. Imaginations were stimulated and thoughts expanded.
DEAR has become an annual event and is time well spent as the school community immerses itself into the fantastic and unique experience that is reading – an activity that we miss so often due to our busy and demanding lifestyles.
