We held our first Inter-House Literary Quiz yesterday evening, Mon 11th of March. The ten Houses were each represented by a team of six, one student from each year.
Questions were based primarily on the World Book Day Writes of Passage, http://worldbookday.com/writes-of-passage/, fifty of the most popular teen and young adult reads as voted for recently by teens and adults. As numerous books on the list are familiar to the students they quickly engaged with the quiz. It kicked off with a round of general questions, then on through a round on film adaptations, followed by a ‘true or false’ round, a ‘who loves who?’ round, a second general round and finally the sixth round, where music from film adaptations was linked to the novels.
Readers and teamwork, combined with the cross representation of ages ensured there was close competition throughout the evening as the houses battled for the prize of the James Joyce Literary Cup. ‘Collins’ will be the first inscription on the cup, winning with a score of 54 points out of a possible 60. Their team was comprised of Darragh Counihan, Jack Savage, Michael V O’Brien, Jack O’Sullivan, Fred Sargaison and Luke McMahon. Not far behind was ‘Arrupe’ with 47 and ‘Sullivan’ with 46.
The reading community of our boys and the success of our inaugural quiz will ensure that our Inter-House Literary Quiz becomes a much anticipated evening on our events calendar for years to come.
Its success is due also to the grateful help received on the night from Mr Shalvey, Mr Amata, Mr Kelly and our visiting German student teacher Ms Haegele.
