Inter-schools 5th Year Library Quiz

Five students from Poetry did an excellent job representing the school at the Inter-school Library Quiz held at Sandford Park on Jan 15th. This is an annual event for 5th year students, initiated originally by Ms Aileen Ivory, Librarian at Alexandra College. Over the years a number of personalities have compèred the event including comedian Ardal O’Hanlon and author Paul Howard. This year’s event was compèred by crime author John Connolly (author of the Charlie Parker mysteries).

The Inter-school Library Quiz takes the format of a table quiz, questions answered by a team of students rather than individuals.  A team’s strength is in the combined knowledge of individual interest on a variety of subjects. This year’s team of Thomas Matthews, Thomas Blake, Donnchadh Walsh, Andrew Corrigan, Sasha Ludwig (pictured from left to right above) proved an excellent combination giving our best performance ever. Steady from round one the boys soared to take all 10 marks in the Sports round and held steady again in the following rounds to overtake some leading teams of the opening rounds. By the end of round six, the final round, Clongowes had an impressive score of 45, while the hosts Sandford Park School had secured 46! A single point separated us from the winners and the silver cup.

This is an excellent result particularly when you consider the line up of 15 schools in attendance including St. Michael’s, Alexandra College, Gonzaga College SJ, Mount Anville, King’s Hospital and St Joseph of Cluny.

Donnchadh Walsh, Andrew Corrigan, Sasha Ludwig, Thomas Blake and Thomas Matthews have set a very high standard for next year’s participants. Syntax take note!
