Clongowes Wood College SJ

Congratulations to Jack O’Leary (above, centre), who capped off a great week for Clongowes athletics as he captured the Senior 5000m Leinster schools’ title in Santry last Saturday afternoon (May 14th). This gives Jack the impressive double of Leinster Cross Country and Leinster track titles.

This was a fine addition to the medals won last Wednesday (11th) by Michael Spillane (Elements) and Charlie O’Neill (Rudiments), in the Minor 800m and Junior Javelin Leinster titles respectively. Congratulations also go to Juan Siljestrom (Syntax) on a wonderful second place finish in the Under 16 Shot.

Jack, Michael and Charlie will now go on to represent Leinster, and the College, at the All Ireland Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday, June 4th.

South Leinster Track and Field

Despite limited numbers travelling to Waterford for Day 1 of this year’s South Leinster Track and Field because of the clash with the long May Bank Holiday weekend, those who did attend put in creditable performances in unseasonably chilly and challenging conditions.

Michael Spillane (Elements – above , right) ran a tactically astute race to clinch the Minor Boys’ 800m title in a blistering time of 2min 13sec. Charlie O’Neill (Rudiments – above, left) also secured a gold for CWC in the Junior Boys’ Javelin with a best throw of 38.65m into a gusting wind. To add to this, Charlie then won silver in the 100m, being just pipped for gold by half a metre.

Other notable competitors were Christian Casey who edged out Charlie Coonan to win bronze in the Senior Steeplechase, Taylor Bergin (Rudiments) who reached the final of both the Long Jump and 80m Hurdles and Daniel Stokes (Elements), also a Hurdles finalist.

Congratulations must also go to other athletes Sam Arkwright, Rory MacGabhann, Bento Hegarty, Peter Lane and Marcus Jankola who represented the school with distinction.

Not to be outdone, a week later on Day 2 Sean Phelan (Poetry) placed 3rd in the Senior Javelin, while Daniel Beggs (Syntax) was 2nd in the Intermediate Shot Putt and Juan Siljestrom Berenguer (Syntax) was 3rd in the Under 16 Shot Putt.
