The Admissions Process for International Students
Each year Clongowes welcomes students from all over the world to join our seven day boarding community and we value the cultural diversity that international students bring to life at the college.
We encourage each family to visit Clongowes and in addition we use Zoom as an ideal way to communicate with those interested in joining the school.
If you are interested in Clongowes for your son please complete an Expression of Interest form and a member of our Admissions Team will be in contact.
Guardianship for International Students
Whilst in Clongowes our international students must have a guardian that lives in Ireland. This may be a family member or friend. The guardian is an important part of the support network for your son while he is in Clongowes. If you do not have a friend or family member you may employ an educational guardian such as those that can be found here.
International Students and the Irish Education System
International students will study for the Irish state exams, namely the Junior Certificate and the Leaving Certificate whilst in Clongowes. Boys sit the Junior Certificate at the end of third year and the Leaving Certificate at the end of sixth year. The Junior Certificate typically consists of 10 broad ranging subjects whilst the Leaving Certificate allows for specialisation across 7 subjects. The Irish Leaving Certificate is widely accepted for entry to universities around the world.
Irish families living abroad and those from E.U. member states do not require a visa to study in Ireland. If you are not a citizen of the E.U. you should check the visa regulations for your country here. Further information is available here
Students with English as an Additional Language
Clongowes welcomes a number of students with English as additional language (EAL), either for full time education or for a 1 year immersive experience. There is a fee premium for students with English as an additional language. Among our supports for students who have English as an additional language, students receive specialised, tailored EAL instruction, in groups, for 2-4 hours per week with a focus on curricular English. Our International Liaison Officer provides additional pastoral support for students and works with the team to provide required reporting and academic transcripts. For more information on our supports for students with English as an additional language, please contact our Admissions Team.
