A joint literacy and ‘Men for Others’ initiative saw the staff and students of Clongowes raise in excess of €450 for Barretstown and the Jesuit Refugee Services on Book Character Dress-up Day last Wednesday (4th, November). The day was the brain child of College Librarian, Ms Jane O’Loughlin (a.k.a. Catwoman) who supplied the following report. As ever, our photographer, Mr David Nelson was on hand to record the event and encourage the boys to strike a few poses…
Wednesday, November 4th, saw us hold our third Book Character Dress-up Day, an event that’s always guaranteed to bring some fun and colour to dull November. A variety of characters spilled out onto the corridors and students found that some teachers had morphed into personalities that had walked out of books; Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, Willy Wonka, Tom Crean (with dog!), Dracula, The Mad Hatter, even Captain Underpants!
Book characters roamed through the school as staff and students alike shook off their daily dress and adopted that of a literary favourite. Judged by the School Captain, Vice-Captain and Secretary, prizes were presented to the best dressed from each year. (More pictures here).
So far, €350 has been donated for Barretstown and the Jesuit Refugee Services. We hope to top €400 by Friday afternoon.
The winners were:
Javier Galdon (Elements)
Mikey Mina Ronayne (Rudiments)
Brian Gallagher (Grammar)
Sean Magill (Poetry)
Jack Savage (Rhetoric)
Ms Zita O’Neill (Staff).
Many thanks to everyone who got involved to support this literary initiative.
Jane O’Loughlin, School Librarian
