Three of our Junior Certificate students, Frank Keating, Sean McMahon and Donnchadh Walsh have been identified by the State Exams Commission as high achievers in Maths and Science. Frank, Sean and Donnchadh have been invited to compete in the Irish European Union Science Olympiad.
The Irish European Union Science Olympiad is an individual, subject based (biology, chemistry or physics) science competition for students who have been identified following their Junior Certificate as having reached a standard of excellence. The competition itself will be held in DCU at the end of October in order to select six students to represent Ireland in the European Union Science Olympiad which this year will be held in Athens.
This is a tremendous honour for the students, their families and the College and we wish the boys every success in their preparations and in the competition itself. Congratulations are also due to their Science teachers, Ms Edith Kearney, Mr Kevin Maume, Mr Stephen O’Hara and Mr Michael Quane as well as to their Maths teacher Mr Pat Linnane.
Mathematical Modelling
Mr O’Hara also tells us that Professor James Gleeson will launch this year’s Mathematical Modelling project in collaboration with the University of Limerick on November 8th. Professor Gleeson, a world leader in his field, will spend time with Poetry and Syntax students advising them on how they should begin the problems which he has set. The boys will then work on these problems with Mr O’Hara and Mr Patrick Gorman over the course of the next few months in preparation for presentations in UL. We are once again deeply grateful to the Professor for his time and dedication to this unique project.
