Daniel O’Connell Memorial Debate

This year’s Past vs Present Debate for the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Trophy will take place on Wednesday 8th November in the Music Performance Area in Clongowes at 6pm. This annual even always provides an excellent level of debate and an all round good night’s entertainment. (Last year’s participants pictured above).

This year’s motion is that ‘this house believes that the value of history is over-rated in a world where no one can turn back the clock’. The present team has the unenviable task of proposing the motion but the lads have been working hard and have come up with some good arguments.

The speakers for the present are Jack Dowling, Karl Von Finckenstein, Ben O’Shea and David O’Connor, while the past will be represented by Peter Griffin (OC’87), Peter Lavery (OC’96), Michael McCormack (OC’02) and Tom Cantillon (OC’14).

The debate will be chaired by the Chairman of the Clongowes Union, Joe McVeigh (OC’96) and the adjudicators will include Mr Justice John O’Hagan (OC’65) and the Rector, Fr Michael Sheil SJ (OC’56).

Date & time: Wednesday 8th November 6pm

Venue: Music Performance Area

Motion: ‘This house believes that the value of history is overrated in a world where no one can turn back the clock.’
